Established in December 2016, The Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission of the New York State Courts is dedicated to promoting equal participation and access throughout the court system byall persons regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. To fulfill this mission, the Commission protects and enhances diversityand promotes the presence of the LGBTQ judicial and non-judicial personnel within the Unified Court System. Our efforts include training and educational programs for judges, non-judicial personnel, and court partners; building collaborative relationships with LGBTQ advocacy organizations, bar associations, the legal profession, and community groups to raise awareness about LGBTQ issues and to foster a more supportive environment; fostering sensitivity for and progress byLGBTQ persons in our courts; and demonstrating a public commitment to respecting the dignity and equality for all who come through our courthouse doors. We now seek an experienced attorney to assist our executive director and co-chairs as the second dedicated staff member of the Commission. Duties will include supporting the planning and execution of all events, updating website, drafting and distributing communications, writing reports, increasing engagement with our social media accounts, developing programming, brainstorming new collaborations, outreach with existing and emerging allies, acting as liaison with stakeholders, law student engagement and mentoring, advocacy efforts, and implementation of new policy initiatives. Basic knowledge of LGBTQ legal landscape, current issues, and community history is crucial. Excellent research and writing skills and demonstrated ability to develop diversity and equality initiatives, practices, and programs are also essential requirements for this position. Some travel required.

 

 

POSITION TITLE: SENIOR ASSISTANT COUNSEL 

BASE SALARY: $74,478 + LOCATION PAY $4,300

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the New York State Bar.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK: Senior Assistant Counsel research and analyze legal questions and issues related to the development and implementation of court policies and the administration of the Unified Court System. Under supervision, Senior Assistant Counsel prepare proposed administrative rules and legislation, litigate cases, advise judges and non-judicial personnel on the implications of procedures and programs, and perform other related duties.

POSITION TITLE: SENIOR COUNSEL

BASE SALARY: $87,520 + LOCATION PAY $4,300

QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the New York State Bar; and two (2) years of service in the Senior Assistant Counsel title; or Two (2) years of relevant legal experience, including up to 18 months of pre-admission experience.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK: Senior Counsel research and analyze complex legal questions and issues related to the development and implementation of court policies and the administration of the Unified Court System. With substantial independence from supervision, Senior Counsel draft proposed rules and legislation, litigate cases, advise judges and non-judicial personnel on the implications of procedures and programs, and perform other related duties.
